The submitted forging was sectioned in the radial-axial plane. The cut surface was ground smooth and etched in a 3:2:1 solution of water, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen peroxide. After sufficient etching time to achieve a well-developed macrostructure (flow lines) the sample was cleaned, rinsed in alcohol, and belown dry.
The examination revealed exiting flow lines at the forging trim line (denoted with red arrows on Photo 1). No evidence was observed of cracks, laps, bursts, folds, or segregation (See below). |
