MSi Testing and Engineering is your top source for mandatory lead testing. We are listed on the CPSC website as a one of the CPSIA approved labs. MSi employ's several lead testing methods all approved to determine the presence and or percentage of lead in any given material. All aspects of a sample submitted for a consumer product test will be inspected. The CPSIA states that the manufacturer of any product intended for a child must be tested to the requirements of the CPSIA specification. Typical children's items that require testing are:

Toys
Dolls
Clothing
Games
Furniture
Strollers
Car Seats
Sports Equipment

The above noted list includes all accessories and sub-components including:

Plastic Components

Warning Labels, stickers and decals

Packaging

Textiles (fabric, mesh, etc.)

Paint - (All colors must be tested individually)

Metal Components (Snaps, clips, assembly components, etc.)

The new law 'CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY IMPROVEMENT ACT OF 2008' states "that the manufacturer of a product intended for the primary use of a child 12 years of age and younger, "shall certify, based on a test of each product or upon a reasonable testing program, that such product complies with all rules, bans, standards, or regulations applicable to the product under this Act or any other Act enforced by the Commission."

The CPSIA states that all children's toys, jewelry, fabric and furniture are to be tested by one of the CPSIA accredited labs BEFORE it is released to the public. Our state-of-the-art ICP Metal Analysis system can effectively determine concentrations of lead far below the 90ppm (effective August 14th, 2009 for paint) level. The series of deadlines intended to regulate and lower the amount of lead currently found in many products can be found on the Consumer Product Safety Testing website:
http://www.cpsc.gov/ABOUT/Cpsia/smbus/manufacturers.html

Consumer Products Tests include: ICP Metal Analysis (Inductively Coupled Plasma), Spectro Analysis or OES (Optical Emissions Spectrometry), EDS (Electro Dispersive Spectroscopy) and XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence). All of the methods listed above, alone, or in conjunction with each other will verify the total concentration of lead in a given material.

MSi can help educate you on the process involved for CPSIA testing. We have read the law and can help you establish whether or not your company must be in accordance with a required CPSIA test as stated within the law.
