MSi Testing & Engineering is a nationally recognized salt spray test laboratory locating in suburban Chicago, Illinois. MSi runs all ASTM and ISO salt spray testing specifications, typically requested ASTM B117 is the leading specification for salt spray test requests. Our engineering staff can answer all of your ASTM B117 salt spray test questions, including any plating test questions or any plating related corrosion testing questions. Our engineering staff has eight degreed metallurgical engineers that have considerable experience providing corrosion testing services to many different sectors of the manufacturing industry.
Commonly used Salt (Salt Fog) test methods are:

Our salt spray department (also called salt fog testing) maintains two salt spray test chambers to ASTM B117 requirements. Both chambers are in daily use and we have the versatility to schedule either chamber for long term salt fog test projects. One chamber is larger permitting projects with a greater number of samples or larger components or assemblies to be tested all within a single chamber.
Long term salt spray tests that require interim examinations actually require twice as many samples as regular B117 tests. Salt spray tests have requirements for both red and white corrosion after interim time periods. Once the sample has been removed from the chamber and cleaned for examination the sample can not be replaced back into the chamber. This is because by cleaning the sample for examination the corrosion process has been interrupted. Once interrupted, placing the same sample back into the test chamber for additional exposure would change the specimens’ corrosion capability compared to the original samples. The engineer supervising the project will review the specification and request a minimum number of samples based on the salt fog test requirements.
MSi has processed salt spray tests that have required over 1000 hrs of exposure time. This is due to some client research and development trials wanting to see how long a new coating layer can provide corrosion resistance. The entire chamber is filled with components and once a week samples are removed from the chamber, cleaned, visually examined and photographed to document the condition. This type of accelerated corrosion test is how current automotive coatings have evolved to provide superior corrosion protection compared to the coatings used prior to 1990 where painted car surfaces almost always exhibited rusting conditions.
