Steel Failure Analysis

Since inception, SGS MSi has expanded our metallurgical engineering laboratory to one of the most recognized in the industry. Our metal testing and failure analysis lab is comprised of the largest metallurgical engineering staff in the U.S., and our expertise includes steel and a variety of other metals/alloys.

To identify steel failure mechanisms, SGS MSi engineers incorporate scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and other analytical techniques. SEM is ideal for evaluating:

  • Steel fatigue
  • Cracked metal failure
  • Overload
  • Cavitation
  • Intragranular fractures
  • Hydrogen embrittlement
  • Ductile & brittle fractures
  • Crevice corrosion
  • Galvanic corrosion
  • Intragranular corrosion
  • Marine corrosion
  • Microbiological corrosion
  • Wear & erosion
  • Pitting corrosion

In addition to SEM technology, SGS MSi’s steel failure analysis team uses a Clemex image analysis system, Clemex stereoscopic software, Clemex micro-hardness testing system, and OES/ICP analysis. Insistent upon quality at every project phase, our laboratory catalogs and tracks samples with bar code technology—and transports samples via our pneumatic tube system.

No matter what your industry, SGS MSi engineers work to preserve product integrity and prevent steel failure across industries. Our long list of industry partners includes, but is not limited to:

  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Transportation
  • Foundry & forgings
  • Heat exchangers
  • Heat treating
  • Boiler & pressure vessels
  • Power generation
  • Food & beverage
  • Farming

When steel failure analysis is complete, SGS MSi customers receive a comprehensive test report that details metal failure causes and provides insight into failure prevention. Presented in a clear, easy-to-read manner, our reports do not contain the complex terminology common to competitors. In addition, they provide the information necessary for you to meet necessary ISO, ASTM and SAE specifications.
