Metal Failure Analysis

At SGS MSi, our nationally recognized failure analysis lab has completed over 1,000 failure investigations during the last 25 years. Composed of the largest metallurgical engineering staff in the U.S., our team provides client-focused service that meets your most demanding project requirements.

SGS MSi engineers utilize scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and other analytical techniques to identify failure mechanisms and recommend steps to prevent recurrence. Our SEM has over three decades of experience isolating:

  • Cracked metal failure
  • Metal fatigue
  • Intragranular fractures
  • Overload
  • Cavitation
  • Hydrogen embrittlement
  • Ductile & brittle fractures
  • Wear & erosion
  • Crevice corrosion
  • Galvanic corrosion
  • Intragranular corrosion
  • Marine corrosion
  • Microbiological corrosion
  • Pitting corrosion

In addition to SEM technology, SGS MSi utilizes a Clemex image analysis system, Clemex stereoscopic software, Clemex micro-hardness testing system, and OES/ICP analysis. Staffed by 40 onsite employees, our state-of-the-art metallurgical laboratory catalogs samples using barcode technology, and transports samples and test data via pneumatic tube system.

Metal Failure Testing

After metal failure analysis is complete, SGS MSi presents all findings in an easy-to-read test report that includes conclusions about failure cause, along with annotated photographs and supporting information. Presented in a comprehensive, digestible way, SGS MSi reports do not contain the complex jargon and engineering terminology common to other lab reports.

SGS MSi metal specialists partner with a range of industries to conduct cracked metal failure testing. Industries include, but are not limited to:

  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Transportation
  • Foundry & forgings
  • Heat exchangers
  • Heat treating
  • Boiler & pressure vessels
  • Power generation
  • Food & beverage
  • Farming

SGS MSi Testing is A2LA accredited, and our laboratory quality program is accredited to ISO 17025. To schedule cracked metal failure analysis at SGS MSi’s metallurgical laboratory or discuss our fast turnaround times for metal failure analysis, call 708.343.3444 or contact us online today.
